A Conversation with Overlee Assistant Coach Kaitlin Pawlowicz

At Overlee, we are incredibly fortunate for the many advantages our young athletes are given–a competitive and supportive community, excellent facilities, and world-class coaching. Among the many fantastic coaching talents walking the pool deck this summer, is one who is in the 99.9th percentile for swimming experience.

Kaitlin Pawlowicz moved to Virginia from Michigan at age 12. After initially living in Leesburg, her family moved to Oakton when she was in high school. She swam for Curl Burke, and Oakton High School, while competing with the Hunter Mill Sharks during the NVSL season. After high school, she attended the University of Texas on a swimming scholarship–they would go on to win the Big 12 three times, and finish 7th overall at the NCAA championships in 2015. Kaitlin was a true all around talent, swimming a variety of events for the Longhorns, including 500 free, 400 IM, 1650 Free, and 200 Fly.

In addition to competing against the best student athletes in the world, Kaitlin qualified for US Olympic Trials in 2012 and 2016. In 2012, she swam 200 Fly, 200 and 400 IM, 200 Back, and 400 Free. In 2016 she swam, 400 and 800 Free, 400 Fly, and 400 IM.

After having a memorable swimming career, Kaitlin decided recently to try her hand at coaching at the suggestion of her former youth coach. Having some experience helping with the younger swimmers at Hunter Mill, and working at various camps and clinics the University of Texas Swim Team put on, Kaitlin got her first full time coaching opportunity with Arlington Aquatic Club. After a successful club season, she decided to expand her involvement to Overlee, where she is currently in her first season.

We enjoyed getting to know Kaitlin better, and surely have so much more to hear from her regarding her on and off deck experiences. We certainly recommend getting to know her better if you have the opportunity, and at the very least making her acquaintance–when it comes to swimming, there are few people in the world who have seen as much as she has!
